OK, I'm starting it.
Who are the children of Nyx (yeah, no father; just Nyx) and what do they have in common?

corinna lin said...

Nyx's childrem were Thanatos, Hypnos, Moros, Eris, the Keres, Geras,Nemesis, Oizys, Momus, theOneiroi, and the Morai. They all can be associated with the night time.

Miss Arney said...

go deeper!

corinna lin said...

uhm were they mayb trapped in the box that Pandora opened?

Miss Arney said...

No.... understand what they really are and then look for a deeper connection

corinna lin said...

So, how about they are all associated with night time, and that is when unexpected happens; therefore the children of Nyx were all irrational, terrifying, or evil things to the Greeks. Am I getting closer?

Miss Arney said...

You are getting closer! I'm going to go silent for a little while to see if any of your peers are willing to jump in. Thank you for visiting this post, Corinna!

amelia marino said...

Thanatos was death, Hypnos was sleep, Eris was strife, The Keres were slaughter, murder, and carnage, Geras was old age, Nemesis was retribution, the Oneiroi, the dreams of i think Hypnos, were Morpheus (impersonated people), Phobetor (impersonated animals) Phantasos (went in the form of objects), and Icelus (impersonated monsters). And I'm still missing a lot more children of Nyx.

Miss Arney said...

Amelia: Use your class notes, not the internet or even the book necessarily.

Then, everyone, ask yourselves: WHY WOULD THE GREEKS ATTRIBUTE THESE FORCES TO NYX?

Corinna: you are close

I have a question not relating to Nyx...I'm kind of confused on the difference between the underworld and hell...

Miss Arney said...

In ancient Greek culture, all of the dead souls went to the Underworld. Once there, they were assigned a destination based on their lives: either punishment in Tartarus or eternity of bliss in the Elysian Fields.
In Christianity, Hell is for all souls who have done something wrong.
Hell = Tartarus.
Does this help?

melissa colodner said...

yes, this helps a lot. So Tartarus is hell and you went to the underworld to decide whether you would be sent to hell or the fields...okay i understand now! Thanks

amelia marino said...

Because they wanted to have reasoning to explain why the night was so frightening so it makes it less scary? And they blamed it all on Nyx?

Katie Yorke said...

Does Dante's view of Hell have anything to do with the Greeks idea of the Underworld. Did Dante do this during the Greeks? Sorry if this question isn't that clear.

john brebbia said...

Dante potrayed hell from a christian point of view, as he was an Italian. He did incorperate many things from the underworld into his version of hell. Things like the river styx, the river acheron, and phlegathon. The walls of dis also represent something like tartaus in geek mythology.

Kelli Van Houten said...

Yeah Miss Arney i was on the same page as Melissa...i was confused about the difference between the underworld and Hell but your explanation cleared things up. But I am trying to answer your question about Nyx but i am kinda confused about who he is...can you re-remind me who he is?

Lauren Bellante said...

Miss Arney, I'm still a little confused about Nyx's children and what they all have in common but, should we memorize all of their names?

maria kohlbrenner said...

Thantos was Death, Hypnos was Sleep, Moros was Doom, Nemesis was Retribution, Oizys was Pain, Momus was Sarcasm, Eris was Strife, The Keres were the Female Spirits of Death, Geras was Old Age, Oneiroi was Dreams, and the Moirai were the Fates who decided a person's length of life and destiny. The gods could not control them. These are all associated with unknown things and fear.

Nyx's children were related to night, but also death (Thanatos) occurs during old age (Geras) and the Fates controlled the length of a person's life (Moirai). It shows what the Greeks thought when they thought about night. (an example being dying in your sleep). Thus, night was feared because any of Nyx's children could be lurking around.

Miss Arney said...

Lauren:
You do not need to know all of them; however, just like the circles of Hell, know a few and a common elements among them!

DON'T FORGET TO STUDY THE APPLES TO BANANAS PAGE, GUYS!!!!!

Miss Arney said...

Nice job, John!

Katie Yorke said...

Who was Pygmalion and what did he do or what was he known for?

corinna lin said...

Pygmalion sculpted what he thought was a perfect woman, and Aphrodite brought the statue to life for him.

Katie Yorke said...

Oh okay thanks Corinna.

lauren bellante said...

ok thank you.

john brebbia said...

Who is the mother of dionysus and why is she significant in greek mythology?

corinna lin said...

No problem, katie. Also, i think the mother of Dionysus was Semele, the Theban princess. She was the one who Hera tricked into wishing to see Zeus's true form, and when she did, was destroyed. Oh and what were the four cultures that used clay to make humans?

john brebbia said...

im pretty sure it was greek, babylonian, egyptian, and hebrew

Kelli Van Houten said...

Yeah Corinna it was the Greeks, Babylonians, Egyptians and the Hebrew, but i think the Indonesians believed in making clay out of humans. I remember that from the reveiw game.

Kelli Van Houten said...

I meant they also believed in it...

i had some questions on Apollo's son... what was his real name? Asclepius? and also... what were the tasks Psyche were told to do. other than seperating the seeds and filling up water with holes in the barrel.

Yena said...

Greeks attributed these stories to Nyx because they needed a way to explain the mysteries during the night. dreams, death, sleep, fates were suppusedly happening because of Nyx's children. am i right?

Yena said...

Miss Arney...
i find that picture so funny!! hehe
she was talking as if the demons come out everyday.
하하하하하하하 ^^*

Nicole Fornabaio said...

I have the same questions as Yena. Who is Apollo's son and what were the tasks of Psyche?
Also... I am still not sure of the question about Nyx. Were the children created to explain the mysteries in the night? I don't get why were they attributed to Nyx... What made her so important?

maria kohlbrenner said...

Pysche had to separate the seeds, gather the gold wool from the sheep, get water from the River Styx, and get beauty from Persephone/Proserpine in the underworld.

Miss Arney said...

John:
First - great question
Second - you are correct. GBEH

Ladies: the only son of Apollo you need to know is Phaethon

Anyone else want to try a question?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Thanks Maria!

amelia marino said...

Who exactly was Orestes?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Orestes was the son of Agamemnon and Clymnestra and he killed his mom to avenge the death of his dad (his mom killed his dad for cheating meanwhile she was cheating too!).

What is the difference between Cantaurs, Satyr's, and Minotaurs?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

He was also pursued by the furies because he killed a family member but Athena realized this was unfair and lifted the curse. Does that answer your question Amelia?

john brebbia said...

centaurs are half man half horse

minotaurs are half man half bull

satyrs are half man half goat

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Thanks

Miss Arney said...

Who asked Athena to lift the curse?

GOOD LUCK TOMORROW, EVERYONE!

Nicole Fornabaio said...

I think Electra did. Is that right?

john brebbia said...

thanks miss arney

Yena said...
