On the novel notes for the Odyssey are we supposed to include the trojan war?

Miss Arney said...

Only what appears in the reading. You will be adding to those notes this summer when you read the poem in its entirety.

maria kohlbrenner said...

For the grammar hw on subject and predicate are we supposed to do simple or complex? (on the hw sheet is says simple, in the packet it says to do complex)???

Miss Arney said...

I just want the basic subject and verb (although the verb may have a helping and main verb).

Tom Higgins said...

Do we have to have the definitions for word masters by tomorrow or next week?

Miss Arney said...

NOTE: we won't be doing Word Masters until after Thanksgiving weekend...so you don't have to have the definitions until next week. Thanks for asking, Tommy!

Tom Higgins said...

Thanks

Kieran B said...

thanks

melissa colodner said...

what other novels and plays will we be reading this year?

Yena said...

Miss Arney: in the study packet To Kill A Mockingbird, there are no assigned assignments right? we can just do as much as we want.

Justin Cueva said...

Is the quiz homework due tomorrow?

Miss Arney said...

Melissa: I think the other works are listed in the introductory materials (and the back-to-school nite stuff)
Yena: You can do as much or as little in the study guide as you like; you should be able to answer all of the 'least you should know" in your head.
Justin: Monday

shauna kelly said...

The novel notes for "The Odyssey" are not due on monday right?

maria kohlbrenner said...

When do we have to have the prepositions memorized by?

shauna kelly said...

For the grammar review worksheet that's due tomorrow, are we doing the complete subject and verb?

Miss Arney said...

Novel notes are due on 12/1

Preposition list can be recited any day this quarter (but better sooner than later so you know them well!)

Grammar page: Identify the subject and verb (main verb + any helping verbs). Just what would go on the diagrammed main line.

Nick Berwick said...

i think i was out of the room at the time......whats with the reciting of the prepositions or something?

Miss Arney said...

You can memorize that... "little" list of prepositions for extra credit (+10 on your grammar exam).

Nick Berwick said...

ooo ok thanks

corinna lin said...

For the novel notes, what do you mean by style?

melissa colodner said...

During extra-help, you were thinking about changing the date of the test; and I was wondering if it was going to be changed? Also when is the vocab test if TKAM is on Tuuesday?

Kieran B said...

about the homework; what is the grammer page and whats considered part 2 of tkm?

Miss Arney said...

B/C the test date was moved, there was no grammar page. Part two is after ch 12 (the rest of the book)

Miss Arney,
On the novel notes for the Odyssey I am confused with the allusions. What allusions should I include in the novel notes?

Tom Higgins said...

Since you said to review part two of TKM does that mean we should read all of part two by Monday?

Kieran B said...

thanks Ms Arney

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Miss Arney,
For the essay can we use parts of quotes or sayings from the chapter as in our newly created title?

Miss Arney said...

Nicole: Yes; just don't do it for every single one.

Katie Yorke said...

For the essay do you have to name the chapters in order that they appear?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Ok, thanks Miss Arney

Mike O'Shea said...

When is the next grammar clinic?

maria kohlbrenner said...

Is it okay if we don't follow the exact 8 sentence structure for the essay (is it okay to add a couple transition sentences here and there?).

Miss Arney said...

Yes...you may vary. The structure is there to remind you not to neglect the CDs or the analysis (CMs)

sarah nelson said...

For the essay,
should we put the title we choose in quotations or just say what title we chose?

melissa colodner said...

For grammar say a sentence said, "The girl would soon be going to class." where in the diagram would you put the "would soon"?

Miss Arney said...

Chapter titles, even your own, would go in quotation marks.

Melissa: would is a helping verb; soon is an adverb (down in the hellfires!)

melissa colodner said...

haha...Ok...thank-you. And when will grammar gang be starting? Also when is the Do You Know Boo? contest?

Kathleen Coleman said...

Why does the Self Editing check list say to have 11 sentences in the body paragraph? can You only have eight?

Miss Arney said...

Kathleen: You may not remember, but I recognized my error in class. It should be 8 sentences (2 CD model)

Brenden Bateman said...

When we want to address a certain event in the story involving one of the characters do we have to give a whole introduction of that character?

Miss Arney said...

Not a whole introduction; just a brief phrase to introduce the character

Brenden Bateman said...

ok thanks

melissa colodner said...

When is the "DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW BOO?" contest?

Tom Higgins said...

Miss Arney...
For the essay do we have to include a bibliography for To Kill a Mockingbird?

Yena said...

MISS ARNEY!!!
that song we listened to in class... i felt like crying... i couldn't even get myself to look at the picture twice... THAT WAS SOOOOOOOOO SADDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

melissa colodner said...

Miss Arney...I would just like to let you know that....I HATED THAT SONG!! IT MADE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH AND IT HAD TO BE ONE OF THE SADDEST THINGS I EVER HEARD!
It was so hard to not start sobbing! Only a tear or two came out thank-goodness or I would have never of heard the end of it from Alec!

Nick Berwick said...

im slightly confused, what are we suposed to do for this weeks grammar challenge?

maria kohlbrenner said...

By direct references to the book for the journal, you just mean to paraphrase a part, not a quote, right?

maria kohlbrenner said...

Oh...and also are we allowed to make up how he died/was killed or are we only allowed to say he died?

Miss Arney said...

The grammar challenge is diagramming

For the journal, it should be paraphrased information...I am looking for some creativity but you should also stay true to the text. That means, the death should be ruled "he fell on his knife"...although you might have some fun as to what he was doing when it happened :-)
Quotes are not required!
...Oh, and you can just give up and trash him midway through if you just cannot take it anymore!

Nick Berwick said...

ok thanks

maria kohlbrenner said...

If there is a snowday tomorrow, is the test still on Monday?

Miss Arney said...

OK...here is the "Storm" Schedule:

If we are in school tomorrow, there will be NO grammar test( I'm pushing it back to after the holiday break.) but the TKM test will be on MONDAY.

If there is no school tomorrow, the TKM test will be on TUESDAY.

If, by some bizarre aberration of nature, we are not in school on Monday, I will have to plan-B the TKM test somehow (maybe a modified open-book or study guide test on Tuesday).

PLEASE wear your PJs properly tonite - no inside/out thing, ok?

Adrienne Ammirati said...

haha Miss Arney, Im not so sure i can bring myself NOT to wear my pj's inside out.

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Miss Arney
Can we hand in last week's grammar challenge tomorrow because of the snow day?

Miss Arney said...

Absolutely...and I'll be posting a new challenge on Tuesday or Wednesday for the vacation.

Katie Yorke said...

Nicole Fornabaio said...

When are the grammar and vocab tests? Non are the day we come back from break... right?

Katie Yorke said...

where is the link for the questions we have to answer about the two stories?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

I have the same question as Katie... where is the link for the questions that guide our reading?

Miss Arney said...

OMG! Thank you so much, Katie & Nicole. The questions are now up; I completely forgot to hyperlink the questions to the webpage!
You can access the guiding questions from the English 9H homepage (above the photos) or on the agenda page, next to the story title.
Thank you again, ladies, for being so diligent :-)

Katie Yorke said...

Oh nevermind, I found them, Nicole: they are on the home page for our class at the top.

Katie Yorke said...

Is it mandatory to do the questions for the short stories?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Katie, no its not, they are just guiding questions and if you can answer them you'll do well on the quizzes. (I only know that because i saw it somewhere else on the blog)

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Miss Arney,
One more question, for the journal, can we use some of the tiles we used in the essay exam?

Miss Arney said...

Nicole: yes, you may :-)

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Thanks! Sorry one more... I forget what you said before break. Can we bullet?

Miss Arney said...

Don't bullet: put the chapter title in the margin, list the title; then your sentences to explain the titles.

Katie Yorke said...

Okay, thanks Nicole.

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Okay, Thanks Miss Arney!

melissa colodner said...

on the agenda sheet it doesnt say the grammar homework for tonight and tomorrow..so can u possibly put it on the blog or web-site please?

maria kohlbrenner said...

When is the grammar test?

Miss Arney said...

Monday.

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Miss Arney,
The agenda says grammar exercise.... There was none right?

melissa colodner said...

yeh I have the same question as Nicole...is there any grammar for tonight?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

There was no homewirk for tonight except to study... right?

Kieran B said...

For the extra credit assignment does the drawing have to be a doll or can it also include games?

Miss Arney said...

Kieran:
I'm intrigued with your idea. Go for it.

maria kohlbrenner said...

When are the vocab and grammar tests changed to? (sorry, I forgot to write them down).

Miss Arney said...

Vocab Tuesday; grammar, Thursday.
Congrats on winning the contest, Maria!

Yena said...

Miss arney
we didn't learn this yet, but how do you diagram an indirect object? is it placed before the direct object?

Miss Arney said...

No, Yena; it's a little more complicated. It is recorded under the verb on a line just like the object of a preposition -- just there is no preposition on the diagonal line. If you want to see what it looks like, look in that yellow grammar packet (chapter 19).

Kieran B said...

ok thanks

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Is a grammar challenge going to be put up for this week?

Miss Arney said...

I'm so sorry....I'll do it right now!

Katie Yorke said...

What are the subjects we need to know or the midterm?

Katie Yorke said...

I have two questions about the shield. Can we use pencil to draw and are we allowed to use botht drawing and computer pictures.

Miss Arney said...

Katie: Yes and yes. Just color in what you pencil so that it is easier to see.
...btw, great question on the midterm thread!

Katie Yorke said...

Thank You!

sarah nelson said...

For the shield, we have to have all the pictures drawn by Tuesday right?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

The Scarlet Ibis novel notes are due Wednesday right?

maria kohlbrenner said...

Are all the extra credit drawings due Friday?

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Just so you know my sister, jenn nardella, and sarah hastings are sitting here and almost just had a heart attack when they saw cast list but then the saw, "its not sunday yet, check back then" and they wanted to hurt you.

Miss Arney said...

LOL! Serves them right for peeking :-)
I'm about to post it right now.

Nicole Fornabaio said...

they thank you for posting this list at an insane hour of the morning that only crazy people would be up at.

Miss Arney said...

Please extend my appreciation for recognizing the fact that only insane teachers would be doing this at insane hours of the morning :-)

Nicole Fornabaio said...

i will... thanks again

Nicole Fornabaio said...

For Journal #2, can we write it as a letter? Like:
Dear.....,
..................................................................................................................
............................................................................
............................................................................................

Sincerely,
Mr. Loisel
Or is it a 5 paragraph piece?

Miss Arney said...

It's an actual letter. Have fun!

Nicole Fornabaio said...

Okay... Thanks!
