Shhhhh! It's a secret! Mrs. Fischer's Forum #2

Secrets and hypocrisies are among the many motifs of To Kill a Mockingbird. While considering this perspective, explain what Miss Maudie means when she says, "The things that happen to people, we never really know." To whom does this quote apply in the novel. Prove it!

This quote applies to Boo Radley, and the Radley family. We never really do find out if Boo truly did stab his father in the leg. The stories about Boo are all just assumptions made up by neighbors like Ms. Stephanie Crawford.

The quote also applies to Tom Robinson and his case. We never know exactly what went on even though we are told both perspectives from Mayella Ewell and Tom Robinson. They could have been lying even though we are drawn to the conclusion that Tom was telling the truth. This quote proves that even though Atticus made a brilliant case for Tom, hypocrisies and discrimination comes in which would make one reconsider what actually happened in there.

I think secrecy is mainly shown in Boo because he is portrayed as mysterious and is always a source for gossip and rumors. We never really know for a fact that he stabbed his father with scissors, it is just assumed.

I personally think that this quote represents the entire Radley house. Nobody ever knows what goes on inside that house because the windows and doors are shut and nobody wants to go near it. There is no way to prove that Boo spends his entire day cutting out newspapers alone.

this quote about secrecy applies to Boo Radley. he is the most secretive character and he is the most mysterious. he would most likely be the one who doesn't share his secrets because of his personality. i feel it is great that Scout and Jem got to know him better and now he feels that there is also something that he can accommplish.

This quote applies to multiple people in the novel. Not only Boo Radley but also Mrs. Dubose because nobody would have ever thought that she was a morphine addict. What happened throughout her life for this occur is unknown and also when it started.

I would agree with Corinna this quote applies to Boo Radley and the Radley family. The Radleys are always in the dark all people know are rumors and think the worse of them. The rumors are just nieghbors thinking irrational, they can't believe the small answer it's not human nature they think it has to be complicated.

I think that the quote applies to Maycomb County as a whole. Every town has it's secrets. It applies to the Radley's, Tom Robinson, Mrs. Dubose, the Ewell's, even Atticus and Scout keep a secret from Miss Fisher about they're reading. Everyone in the town has secrets and that's why the town has people that others don't trust, and might even be afriad of.

This could apply to Atticus keeping the secret of him being "old one shot" from his children. But in the time of crisis with the mad dog his secret was revealed and at the time Scout and Jem didnt know Atticus had a good shot and were shocked. After that incident they took back everything about how old and boring he is.This proves Miss Maudies quote b/c the children were so quick to judge the flaws within Atticus they didnt even think twice about him doing anything nearly as cool as that.In essence this quote is saying there can be things hidden from us that can change our perspective and until we know the whole story we shouldnt make any quick judgements.

I think that this quote applies almost directly to Boo Radley and the whole Radley family. Almost everything that goes on with the family happens behind closed doors so no one knows whether or not Boo stabbed his father. Most of the things that are said about the Radley family are either assumpitions or rumor.

Thank you for your comments. You are thinking and I like that. Do you think the quote applies in real life? Victoria maybe onto something ... what do you think?
