A special request was made for an open-discussion forum on our class blog page. Feel free to voice any unspoken or unfinished thoughts regarding classwork, homework, class texts, or class discussions...just remember to keep your comments appropriate!!!
We can also use this site as a way for you to ask and to respond to questions that you might be having with the homework or readings ( but I think that I might need a separate post for grammar!).
As always, this does count for participation credit (B-squares).

Miss Arney...
the yearbook project is fun...
but it is taking FOREVER!!!!!
hehe... anyway... atleast it isn't boring and always have something to be doing...
bye~~ 히히히
Miss Arney...
for daily reflection number 7 do you mean counterparts as in the Roman myths?
i have the same question as corinna. I dont understand what you mean by counterparts and the examples.
Corinna: No - counterparts are other cultures (see your initial class notes)
Yena: I'm so glad you're enjoying it...and that's why I warned you to start early :-)
Sorry, Melissa, I didn't see your question before I responded. It's in the "Introduction to Classical Mythology" notes from class or in Hamilton.
Let me know if you are still confused, ladies!
Ok thank you! Oh and Harrison says hi!
hey...
i had a similar question to corinna but you already answered it. thank you...
Miss Arney...
i know you answered corinna's question... but i still don't really understand what to write about. is fear the terrifying and the gods looking like humans/ themselves count as counterparts?
please answer back.
i hope you have a nice weekend.
For the mythology yearbook can we have various groups of characters from all different shows? Or do they have to be all from the same?(sorry if this question doesn't make sense)
I have a question on the yearbook project... for the advertisements page would you make the heading advertisements or would it be better to write sponsors?
Yena: Those are the values that differ from the counterparts...Babylonians; Egyptians; Aztecs, etc. are the counterparts; the beliefs are what differ.
Amelia: I think I understand the question. No, the characters do not all have to be from the same show; you can mix things up.
Corinna: The heading of the page is completely up to you!
Oh okay thanks :)
Miss Arney...
Does the drop your lowest quiz birthday pass you sent to my house work if i wanted to use it for the reflections?
A quiz pass is worth 70 points; a daily reflection is 50. I can adjust the points at the end of the quarter, but I cannot give out "change" mid-quarter; it would get a little out of control. If you take a "0" for a daily reflection now, it can be dropped at the end of the quarter. Is this making sense?
Miss Arney:
For daily reflection 6 is it okay if you gave a little one sentence idea of what the myth is.
oooo! so the counterparts are what we did in class...like the differences between how man was created and how they differ. O okay I understand a little better now.
Thanks.
I love doing the yearbook project it is so much fun! I just don't knkow are we doing the god/desses as if they were real high school students or if they are really gods like they have their "powers" and everything that we read in Mythology? Sorry if this question is confusing.
For the yearbook, we can use the same gods and goddesses as seniors and in the superlatives and clubs right?
Katie: You can treat this as a special high school, like Hogwarts. They are students but can have special powers.
Sarah: Yes, the seniors can be in the clubs, etc...just make sure you have at least 25 different characters in the book.
Ok thanks!
Thank you for answering my question. LET'S WORK HARD EVERYONE!!!!! heheheh :P
Don't settle for mediocrity; you are all better than that!
Hi Miss Arney!I have to agree with Yena because the yearbook project is fun but it takes so much time to plan and organize the gods and goddesses (or i.e. students). I feel that this project is a very helpful and creative one!
~Kelli
Yena, Katie, and Kelli:
I am so glad that you are finding the project fun...and if it is time-consuming, it is because you are investing effort! I realize that it can consume many hours, which is why I gave you several weeks (and lots of warnings). I worry for anyone who hasn't started it yet!
Keep up the great work, guys!
AND DON'T FORGET YOUR BLUE STUDY GUIDES TOMORROW!!!!!!
can some faculty members for the yearbook be mortals?
Sarah: Yes
oh yeah and is it okay for the superlatives that we have one thats best friends but have it twice (one for girls and another for boys)?
That would be the same superlative, though
Yo
Hi, Devin. Welcome to the board, although I can't exactly award you extra credit for a "Yo".
Sorry
Hahaah Devin.. anyway Miss Arney, for the superlatives, is it okay if we have a superlative that has only one person in it instead of a guy and a girl? Because some of the superlatives that I have only fit the characteristics of one person and no one else really fits.
Amelia:
The requirement is for 10 with a male and female I think. If you have more than 10, then you can use one gender...so try to think of some others that have pairs.
Okay thanks. Oh yeah and for the senior photos, for the quotes, we have to put who said the quotes, right?
It would be good if you did
okay but some of my quotes are anonymous or are very common quotes that it's hard to trace back who originally said it. Should I just not put anything there for those quotes or just write anonymous? (p.s. sorry for asking so many questions)
If it is just a quote without a known speaker, you can do either: List it as "anonymous" or just leave the quote without a speaker.
I hope things are going well with the project!
Thanks!
for the grammar hw what do you mean by taking notes on the page?
i'm just making sure, but if we do a team page then we don't have to do a clubs page right?
sarah: I'm not 100 percent sure but I think that youhave to do both. That's what I did.
Teams and clubs are two different things; they are two separate pages.
Regarding the grammar:
Take notes on the info that appears before the exercise, like with pronouns and adjectives.
Hope this helps!
Yes that helps a lot. Thanks.
how much does the grammar homework count for in our overall average?
Im not doing to well on those homeworks thats why I am asking...
o and I also agree with everyone who enjoyed the yearbook project it was so much fun to work on!
Melissa:
Thank you; I am so glad you enjoyed the project!
ALL of your homework (together) counts for 15% of your grade. Grammar is tough for everyone...and as long as you do well on your other assignments, it won't hurt your grade.
Miss Arney...
For the grammer homework on review B on page 13 do all of the sentences have pronouns?
Thank-you, and I have the same question as Julie. Do all the questions have pronouns, because I was just doing them and only like 4 had them...
No: only a few pronouns appear
Okay thank-you, this is sort of a random question, but what is the next novel or play not in the area of mythology that we are going to be reading?
Melissa:
Absolutely NOT a random question. I can understand why you are all surfeit with mythology.
We are doing the abridged Odyssey next and then we are revisiting To Kill a Mockingbird.
Guys: PLAY ON THE NEW POST! STUDY FOR MYTHOLOGY!
okay thanks i cant wait to revisit tkam! I loved reading that book! When will we be reading Jekyl and Hyde?
Miss Arney...
For the Odyssey homework, do we have to do the study guide questions under the wanderings?
Jekyll and Hyde is in the spring (along with Frankenstein).
Jackie: Yes. If I don't specify specific questions, you are responsible for the entire section.
okay! I can't wait for Jekyl and Hyde...I love the resturaunt in the city. All the Odyssey homework is due friday right?
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm having trouble with the Odyssey reading. Even with the study guide questions it is hard to understand the reading and what it's trying to say.
no amelia it is not just you because i'm having some trouble understanding what the readings are and the order of all the events....some of the similes and comparisons make no sense to me at all.
Miss Arney...
i have a question on grammar...
are nouns even in prepositional phrases counted as nouns?
ex) ... in the garden by the flowers...
are garden and flowers counted as nouns????
Yena:
Yes. They are called "objects of prepositions" and are VERY important!
I dont want my grade back i think i didnt do too great
this is molly my mom is peggy
Melissa and Amelia, I am having the same problem too. I get most of the little things and details but it's the bigger picture that I am missing and not understanding. I don't know if i am doing something wrong or if it's just difficult to comprehend.
that is the exact problem I am having. Is the Odyssey a book of many tales of Odyseus? Or is it one tale that continues but we are just reading seperate parts of? I'm very confused.
Melissa, I agree. I don't get if it's one continuous thing or if it's little tales.
Hey Miss Arney,
When can there be a review session for grammar? I keep on getting bad grades on those, after using a dictionary! I feel like i am getting the easiest assignments wrong!
Miss Arney...
On the agenda for friday's homework it says worksheet: Trojan or Greek.
Did we get a worksheet?
I am available for extra help in grammar most days after school....
and Jackie, I cancelled the Trojan/Greek assignment; you guys could use a break from Hamilton!
Miss arney...
my computer wont put up the assignment.. can you post the assignment on here for me? the laptop usually opens the page, but my laptop is currently not working. thank you...
Miss Arney,
Could you please explain what me and Nicole are confused on here...is the Odyssey one large poem or many stories?
Grammar: Review C (p 14) in grammar packet. Take notes on Verbs (pp 15);
As for ODYSSEY: Like the ILIAD, the story begins at the end...Odysseus is being held on and island by a beautiful goddess (poor guy!); he finally gets to leave, is abused by Poseidon, and washes ashore on the island of the Phaecians. The rest of the narrative is his story as he conveys it to them in their court. So it's like a giant flashback.
Does this help?
Hi Miss Arney, I unfortuantely won't be in school tomorrow so i was wondering if i could take the mythology test Wednesday during lunch.
You explain this a lot but what can I do with the B Squares?
what grade did we have to get on the yearbook to get the extra-10 points?
Sarah: not a problem; I hope that you and your family are doing well.
Katie: the B-squares are like an allowance or salary; we keep your savings account based on class participation. At the end of the quarter, all of it gets turned in and we figure out how the points will best help your grade.
Melissa: 10% of your grade (ANY grade) will be added onto your myth s/r test
....just got home from school; very tired....sleeeeppppyyyy.
See you bright and early tomorrow!
thanks! with word masters...I know that the tests dont get graded but, what exactly are they for then?
This is the link that explains the program:
http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com/high.htm
We will be practicing with this type of close reading as we begin to review ODYSSEY.
Hey Miss Arney I just had a question...how many people can work together on the oumkin carving project for extra credit??
okay...thank-you! What exactly do we have to do for the pumpkin carving extra-credit?
Kelli- i am almost completely positive but i think you have to carve or draw a pumpkin that resembles any person or figure that we have read about in anything (mythology, to kill a mockingbird, and then there were none...)
2 people can work together...and, Katie, you're spot on. Any character we've encountered (from summer reading through Odyssey).
...and it may be carved, painted, decorated, etc.
I hope you guys have fun with it!
Miss Arney,
That did help a little bit. It's just confusing but i understand it better now. Thanks!
I have a question... What are the names of some of the lands that Odysseus came across other than Charybdis, Scylla, and the Sirens?
okay thanks I can't wait to do this extra-credit...!
Miss Arney
for the journal/ brocher(spelling error) can we use first and second person? would we get poins taken off for that. i think you said something about it in class but i forgot.
For the brochure are we suppose to say that the people who go on it are traveling through adventures that Odysseus went through? Also, do we say the areas are by Ithaca and Troy or something like that?
Should we double space our brochure?
Question...
Is it the Centaur or the MInotaur that are forever stuck in the maze?
Brochure:
You may use 2nd person (the only time EVER) in this... it should be double spaced; you are pretending as if Odysseus's travels are real; and it is the Minotaur that is stuck in the labyrinth on Crete.
Okay, thanks :)
when will we be going over grammar? I am not doing very well in that area at all...is there extra help for it?
Miss Arney...
Why did Odysseus have to go through that terrible journey? How come it wasn't someone else like Agamemnon? Did Odysseus do somthing to deserve the punishment, or was he just a good charecter for Homer to chose?
Hi Miss Arney, I forgot to ask you if I could take the test tomorrow afterschool rather than lunch.
miss arney
our (Corinna and yena) pumpkins look so funny and cute. i think that it didn't turn out so bad but i could have been better. don't you think its cute? hehe
Miss Arney...
since I am missing school on the 6th, 7th, and 10th I was wondering if I would be able to get the work I will be missing on Monday or Tuesday so I will be able to get a head start on it? That would be great!
-Melissa
