TWILIGHT!

I give up! Since we seem to be connecting Twilight (and the rest of the series) to class curriculum every single day, let's be serious about it. Use this thread to:
* find thematic and characterization connections to the literature we cover in class
* compare Edward, Bella, Jacob, etc. to the characters we have encountered this year.
* discuss the characters, themes, plot developments, and possibilities within the series itself.
* compare the book to the film.
Did I miss anything?

i have a feeling that the main difference between the novel and the movie was that in the book their passion for eachother was written down so we were able to recognize it right away. But, in the movie, their chemistry was not shown as powerful as it is in the book. Instantly in the book you knew they were in love but in the movie it took a couple scenes.

I agree with Melissa... I feel that the book gave you that warm fuzzy feeling that they were crazy in love with eachother. However, in the movie, it did take a couple scenes to get that they were even in love with eachother at all. I also wish that their love was more of that cute cuddly love that you see in the book also. I feel loke they tried to make it more of an action film than a love story.

I think someone in class said that Romeo is like Edward Cullen. I really do not agree with that because from what we have seen from Romeo and Juliet so far, Romeo is a big drama queen and bases his love on how the girl looks. In Twilight, Edward falls in love with Bella even though, she isn't the most beautifulor coordinated. Edward falls in love with her because of who she is (and how she smells.) Which ties into the theme that we were talking about when you are truly in love appearances do not matter.

i agree with everyone so far. i think that the book portrayed the passion Edward and Bella had for each other better than the book. i also feel that Edward Cullen is so~~~ much better than Romeo so far.

Yeah Romeo is definatly a big baby and feels the need to complain about his problems. However Edward, the loving god that he is, keeps his problems to himself for a while until he can gain trust in Bella. Edward is the more dreamier person any girl would want to have as a boyfriend but Romeo is not the man i want sweeping me off my feet! So to agree with Katie, the theme of appearances do not matter fits perfectly into these two books/plays.

i think that Katie's comparisons are really accurate...
i feel that all of the comparisons that Katie made were ones i would have found in the book...
all of the books we read this year really match twilight in my opinion.

Help...who is Mrs. Rogers (ATTWN?)...Well, I guess the pale factor fits. But if Edward is Odysseus, wouldn't Bella be his Penelope? I think Circe might be a better Victoria b/c of the tinge of wickedness in her (although I'm not sold on that idea)... what do you think?
And I'm guessing that we pretty much hate Romeo so Edward will be no where near him, right? :-)

OK...the "movie". U-G-H. No chemsitry; Bella was almost masculine and her "unique" qualities that drew Edward to her are virtually absent. No humor/ banter between them. Poor screenwriting, poor casting, poor direction. Best scenes out. OK, I'm done. Sorry - couldn't restrain from participating :-)

I think Bella was Mrs. Rogers because both are helpless and both of them fainted due to something they were not able to handle. And I did not base the comparisons on who they marry or hate in each book, but more of their characteristics. Victoria definetley made a better Penelope because she is smart, very clever, and strong. AndI definetley agree, the book was so much better than the movie, although I think the casting was good except for Bella (very masculine.) But, I heard they got a new director so I hope New Moon is better!

I have a feeling New Moon will be much better with the director. I also think we will see Kristen Stewart (Bella)play her character much better because she is depresesd for half the movie...and she just gives off a depressing vibe. And her and Jacob have very good chemistry too.

As we read more of Romeo and Juliet I see so many similarities between this and R&J. First Edward is very bipolar like Romeo and they both have similar views before they "fall in love". Before meeting Bella Edward thinks that no one is good enough for him and prior to meeting Juliet Romeo feels that no one will love him. Then after seeing them, both guys know they are in love. Also the whole theme of forbidden love ties into both of them.

Like we were talking about in calss today, R and J and Twilight are similar because when edward tells bella hes a vampire, she loves him anyway. in R and J, when Juliet finds out Romeo is a Montague, she knows she loves him and does not let it phase her.

Miss Arney.
i totally agree with you.
the book was so much better than the movie. i thought bella to be a pretty girl who looked frail and looked like she needed someone else to protect her.
but in the movie... she so~~ looks like she could protect herself. really the whole movie was so~~~ bad. i really wish they make New Moon better than Twilight.

juliet and bella are very alike because they fall in love at first sight before they realize the truth behind each others love. romeo is a montegue and edward is a vampire...but they fall in love too late.

MISS ARENY DID YOU SEE THE NEW MOON TRAILER!!

maria kohlbrenner said...

omg i know! it looks soooo good!!!! can't wait!

Miss Arney said...

Have we picked up on the New Moon references in R&J? hee hee

melissa colodner said...

oh no not at all...

(sarcasm)

the whole book is based on r&j!!

maria kohlbrenner said...

yea especially w/ the mix up with friar john and balthasar. romeo heard that juliet was 'dead' so he wanted to kill himself and in new moon edward heard from rosalie that charlie was at a funeral so he thought it was bellas so he wanted to kill himslef too.

Miss Arney said...

At least Edward won't ever criticize Romeo again...but I'm afraid I will.

A line from NEW MOON has been bugging me (in regards to Paris) and I just found it tonight - at the end when Jacob confronts B&E and she is afraid they will fight. She thinks: "They fight; Paris falls." OH, I AM SLAIN!

melissa colodner said...

does it really say "they fight; paris falls" !! if it does thats so weird!
