English 9H and Harry Potter

J.K. Rowlings' series borrows from universal themes, concepts, archetypes, and myths. Use this thread to discuss any connections you find between the Harry Potter series and the many characters and works of literature we have studied this year. Don't forget about how her mythological allusions enhance the characterization of her cast.

One of the things I love most about J.K. Rowlings series is the mythological references she uses. Although I didn't know about them before this class every time you would mention one Melissa and I would look at each other and go, "oh my gosh." Some of the things that tied in with mythology were fluffy (cerberus) and argus filch.

I love the Harry Potter series. One thing I noticed about the books is that J.K. Rowling good vs. evil as an important theme throughout her books. Harry is portrayed as the pure good hero, like Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird. Draco (i hope i am spelling that right) is portrayed as the pure evil character like Bob Ewel.

I also love Harry Potter books. i must have read each of them like 20 times. but i have to disagree with Katherine. i feel that the pure evil one is Voldemort/Tom Riddle. Draco sort of becomes nice at the very end of the last book.

I enjoy the Harry Potter series especially the fact that all of the thematic concepts we learned this year were in the books. All the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird difiantly could be found in the Harry Potter series as well. I feel that Albus Dumbledore would be Atticus in To Kill the Mockingbird. I also felt that the books were well written and filled with allusions and figurative devices just like To Kill a Mockingbird.

I agree with Katie. I was looking through the books, and I saw a lot of mythological references that I didn't before. For example, the fact that Professor McGonagall is named Minerva.

I think one of the most universal thematic concepts that we find in the Harry Potter series is one that we find in a lot of the works of literature we read. Courage is definetley a major part in the series along with To Kill a Mockingbird and Odysseus. And although we discussed that courage may not have been the most ocused on thematic concept, it did play a big role in the novels.

Oh Katie you are starting to sound like Justin. But I totally agree, themes like courage, identity, and pride are all common themes. I think Harry and many of the other characters posses these characteristics as well.
