I realize that everyone is stressing about the thematic comparison between Jekyll and Hyde and Jurassic Park. Here is a forum for you to collaborate with one another and to ask questions / brainstorm/ formulate arguments and debates as you prepare to write the essay. Have fun, scholars! I'm really looking forward to reading these :-)

this is who i think everyone would be...
Lanyon...Ian Malcolm
Jekyll...John Hammond
Hyde...Nedry?
Utterson...Alan Grant
The only one I'm not sure about is Hyde, becasue Nedry is evil but he isn't something that Hammond created.
I agree with those comparisons but yeah who would Hyde be even thoguh Nedry is evil he is not Hyde evil. Would the dinosaurs be Hyde?
I agree with Katie with the dinosaurs being Hyde. The dinosaurs were created by Hammond. The dinosaurs like Hyde are more of the id. Also with symbolism could the salt in Jekyll and Hyde be compared to the mosquito in Jurassic Park? They both lead to discoveries and the salt is impure as the mosquito contains blood from an extinct animal.
MISS ARNEY SCARING ME TODAY WAS MEAN!
i agree with Kathleen for the impurity of the salt and the mosquito. however, i think that what molly said in class was right. i think that Jekyll was Hammond but Hyde is the whole park. everything... Jurassic Park was a creation by Hammond gone bad.
I can't decide if hyde should be considered the park or the dinosaurs... i guess it could be considered either way. I do agree with the other comparisons made, Especially Hammond as Jekyll.
do we have to fill in that three page packet for the essay or is it just a guidline?
sorry i have more questions: when is the essay due and on the guideline it says maintain present tense and active voice, what is acyive voice?
I am collecting the packets; you should fill out the portions that deal with creating your thesis & the topic sentences for your paragraphs. That's it.
Active voice means that there should be very few linking verbs and the subject should be committing the action in the sentence.
For example:
Passive Voice (BAD!): Gennaro is eaten by a tyrannosaurus rex.
Active Voice (GOOD!): the Tyrannosaurus rex attacks and eats Gennaro.
One more note!!!
You may TAG the thesis before the thesis statement; that means, the thesis may be essentially two sentences if it is less wordy and less awkward to write. Does this make sense?
Yes that makes sense thank you
sorry one last question: when is the essay due for period 2 b/c i no we were a day behind everyone else
Miss Arney- Does the general grabber or thesis statement consist of the thematic concept?
Just a reminder: the essay is due on THURSDAY for each class.
do we have to say two figurative devices the two works have in common in the thesis?
Elisha: You don't need to put the lit elements in the thesis; you can refer to them in the analysis but it isn't required.
is it ok if we refer to Jurassic Park as a novel or do we need to say it as a movie? i said it was Michael Crichton's novel.
how do you cite the quote. would you do who said it, who directed it or whe wrote it?
Is this a strong thesis statement?
When obsessed individuals push the scientific progression of an idea over the boundary of nature, destruction ensues.
The themes I'm trying to use are..
-> Obsession/monomania
-> scientific progression/ overstepping boundaries
Is it ok if we have a quote, but all its explanation and how it relates to the thesis are put before it? It just fits better that way in one of my paragraphs.
thats a really good thesis caitlin.
is this too long and wordy,..
In the novel Dr. Jekyll and Hyde by Robert Stevenson and the feature film Jurassic Park written by Steven Spielberg, the obsession or yearning for scientific progress without thinking ahead of the possible outcomes can lead to sudden calamity.
both of your thesis' are good. Can we use diresct quotes as commentary too or just concrete details.
thanks, yes, Elisha I think it's a tiny but wordy, but it's still a really good thesis..we can separate the thesis into two sentences, right?
Is this correct?
Micheal Crichton wrote a book that the movie is based on and Steven Spielberg directed the movie?
If I include the tag in my intro before the thesis do I have to mention it again in my thesis statement?
How are we supposed to add quotes from Jurassic Park.. online?
The website is IMDB.com Type in JURASSIC PARK and click on the film title.
Then, look down the left-hand margin and you will see a link for "Memorable Quotes"
Cite as (Jurassic Park) - underline title (it won't work on this blog site)
No, you don't have to TAG twice in the intro!
Use either director or film based on MC's novel; either one is fine
Did I miss anything?
okayy SOS!!!! how do you annotate in the introduction again?
do we need to have quotes in just the paragraphs on the thematic concepts or also in the one on life lessons? b/c i used destruction/disaster for my life lesson, but i can't really think of concrete details other than Hyde is evil, the dinosaurs are evil, people die.
Do we have to use quotes for Jurassic Park concrete details? also if we don't, do we have to cite (Jurassic Park) still?
would it be too vague if I said.. "In both the novel and the movie...insert rest of thesis statement here"
I already stated the TAG of these two works and I don't want to sound repetitive.
Should we say Jurassic Park is written by Michael Crichton or directed by Steven Spielberg?
I am confused about what goes in each paragraph, I have my intro, and 2nd paragraph. I hope my 2nd paragraph is right but I don't know, I did it about characterization in each of the novels/movies and how that contributes to the theme. Can i do the third and fourth paragraphs on 2 different literary elements?
Kathleen, Miss Arney said that either one is fine.
I'm writing my third paragraph on monomania. Should I try and incorporate how this is bad or should that be strictly in the fourth paragraph where I'm discussing the destruction the combination of these themes cause?
I love that you guys are supporting each other....I will try to identify the problems.
Kelli: Annotation is the "movie announcer" thing - one sentence hitting the main summary that best fits what you are trying to prove
Caitlin: Don't TAG the thesis if you've already done so in the introduction. Oh, and I think we spoke that you are shifting the two thematic concepts around from your thesis. So boundaries are in par 2 and monomania in par 3?
Kathleen, Caitlin is correct. YOu either say that the film is directed by SS or it is based on MC's novel.
Also, you only have to cite the film with a parenthetical citation IF you use a direct quote. If you paraphrase or summarize a CD in the film, you don't need to cite it.
Maria: Don't worry about lit elements in this one, particularly in JP. You MAY "term drop" like mention in your CMs that something foreshadows or demonstrates characterization, etc.
I don't think I'm checking the blog again tonight; however, I am wide awake and will be for the next few hours. If you have a question that you need ME for instead of your scholarly classmates (who are doing quite well here, I must say), you may call me up to 11PM tonight: 406-4532.
Good luck, scholars.
how do we ICE and do commentary?
Elisha, I'm not certain I understand your question.
You need to establish context in the IC part; the E part is the first CM.
Am I answering you correctly?
IS IT REALLY DO ON FRIDAY!
Yes Melissa.. and thank god because I REALLY needed it!!
thank goodness...
now i have an extra day to work on my essay....
i do feel that we should try to get the assignmetns in on time...
but.... it's just doesn't work out......
For the essay we dont have to use fig. devices and lit. elements?
Yes, I'm a total pushover now. The essay is due on Friday; novel notes on Monday.
I hope this alleviates some tension that many of you have been expressing...but try to get it in tomorrow for the extra points
:-)
Yes, you guys have me wrapped around your little fingers...and yes, I love you very much!
Um, but I still don't understand how periods 2 & 4 never asked for the extension!!! Molly P: you're normally ALL OVER THAT!
If we use a quote and react in our introduction can we first mention the book and novel in the thesis but "connect" by saying "Many works of Romantisism...?"
Also, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde should be expressed in quotations right??
Miss Arney...we could not ask for an extension because we asked for and extension on the yearbookand did not want to push our luck. We had to rely on our fellow classmates and hope that they would get our brain signals that we wanted it extended...i guess they got the signal loud and clear!
p.s. casey books are underlined not in quotations.
Is it alright to use a historical event as a grabber for the GELAT introduction?
and whats the actual genre of JEkyll and Hyde
I have another question: ive been having a hard time annotating my intro. this is the best i got-
"The mad scientist, unleashing his pure evil side upon the streets of London, goes against the natural duality of humanity's soul as having an evil and a good side, the theme park designer, resurecting organisms that have been dead for millions of years, completely goes against the natural laws of death and extinction" its really long and wordy and im not sure it does what an annotation sentence is supposed to do
what do we have to have in the conclusion
Miss Arney,
yes, monomania is in paragraph 3 and boundaries is with scientific progress in paragraph 2.. does that work?
Brenden...I think that the genre of J&H is gothic horror.
oh and Katie the conclusion has to have a modern day example/how this lesson or theme applies to present day
thanks maria
Batemman is this is my thesis. Maybe it will help "In Steven Spielberg’s science fiction film Jurassic Park and Stevenson’s gothic horror Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde characters John Hamon and Dr. Jekyll learn that scientific progress that over steps boundaries leads to break through discoveries that cannot be controlled."
Caitlin thanks
i think you can put the two thematic concepts together in one paragraph
Thanks jared. i want an honest opinion from anybody on my thesis: (without the TAG)
"Going against nature can result in cataclysmic events, ensuing death and destruction to those ignorant to the power of nature."
that "ensuing" was supposed to be "ensuring"
Miss arney,
i am trying to use the quote that has "devoid of merit" by john hamon when he is talking about the flea circus. what was it supposed to be.
is the annotation for the two works suposed to be two sentnces?
THe thesis sounds good but what are your themes that you are trying to prove?
The annotation can be one sentence or two. just make sure it is not a run on.
my theme is "going against nature"
How many quotes do we have to have from the the book ant the movie
Bateman Miss Arney said today in class that you need two themematic concepts and a lesson.
thanks i didnt know that.
the sheet said we have to have "a minimum of 6 citations from the novel (direct quotes) which are properly embedded."
Do we have to hand in the outline packet?
Thanks Jared
Brendan I think your thesis is good but you should add another thematic concept in it.
Thanks Kathleen ill do that right now
Miss Arney,
Do we need to specify whether we are using the SAT version of Jekyll and Hyde? Because I just realized that the page citations would be different.
I saw also so that in the packet but i am still confused on whether we need six quotes from the book and othe quotes from the movie or we need six quotes in total form the book and the movie.
i decided to separate my TAG and thesis but i dont know how to transition them, does anybody have any ideas?
Jared here's the quote:
John Hammond: You know the first attraction I ever built when I came down south from Scotland? Was a Flea Circus, Petticoat Lane. Really quite wonderful. We had a wee trapeze, a roundabout - - a merry-go - - what you call it? A carousel - - and a seesaw. They all moved, motorized of course, but people would swear they could see the fleas. "I see the fleas, mummy! Can't you see the fleas?" Clown fleas, high wire fleas, fleas on parade... But with this place, I - - I wanted to give them something real, something that wasn't an illusion, something they could see and touch. An aim devoid of merit.
and Brenden: we are supposed to hand in the outline packet to show that we thought it out
Im also confused with the quotes it only says that we need them from the book but it says nothing about the movie
Brenden: you need 6 CDs from the movie, but they don't HAVE to be quotes. They can be, but it's not a requirement
thanks maria
thanks miss arney
OK...ONE MORE TIME (guys, PLEASE start to take notes in class when I review this):
You need 2 concrete details PER text PER paragraph. That means 4 CDs per paragraph and 6 for the entire essay.
EACH and every CD needs 2 commentaries.
EACH reference to the novel MUST be a direct quote; you may paraphrase OR quote from the film.
Does this clarify it?
Raj: Good question. I am omitting the Works Cited page, but I have both books, so I can check both.
Thanks for asking.
Marie and Jared:
IMDB has it wrong.
It should be "An aim not totally DEVOID of merit"
can someone explain the "so what" in the thesis because im not sure if mine has it
Can somebody tell me whether we can use a quote as a commentary?
Brendan the so what is what is the result of your theme. Ex: Hubris makes you overstep your boundaries which can lead to devastating effects.
Rajat: I asked Missa Rney in class and she said that you should really only use them as concrete details.
thanks kathleen
Miss Arney is it alright if i switch "going against nature" to "opposing nature" in some of my sentences since it fits better
Absolutely, Brenden
DO we have to wright the conclusion like the Critical lens essay?
Tommy: ? What do you mean? The conclusion should focus on a modern-day application of the theme expressed in your thesis statement.
It doesn't have to be more than 6 sentences, though. Does this help, or did I misunderstand your question?
thanks miss anrney
We dont have to introduce the characters right?
i have kinda random question, do you capitolize "earth" if you are talking about the planet?
Yes. That's what I meant. I was wondering if we had to make a comparion to something modern. Thank you.
You should give a brief explanation of who the characters are...
When you refer to Earth as a proper noun, then capitalize it. If it is the dirt/ ground then it isn't.
If we include a quote in the intro, does that count as one of the six quotes?
Does it matter how many quotes come from each piece?
Tommy, I'm almost positive the six quotes we need doesn't include the intro. If it helps, I found some random quote online that dealt w/ _______ (your thematic concept here) and REACTed that.
I don't think that quotes from Jurassic Park matter, but I think it is required that all CDs from JH HAVE to be quotes (they can be paraphrased).
yeah the Jekyll and Hyde CD's have to be direct quotes and the Jurassic Park CD's can be quotes or paraphrased.
ok. thanks
WOW! What a dino-mite blog :-)
(Sorry; couldn't resist).
